Independent Tool Review by Peter Brett – The Specialist Tool and Equipment Magazine, February 2009

Perhaps I shouldn’t advertise this too much in this litigious age where people are quick to take offence, but I worked out the height and width of my neighbour’s house the other day – without leaving my office! He will also need about 5 litres of exterior emulsion to cover the 15.135 m2 of white wall in front of the house. read more »

See a lightning flash and start counting the seconds. If you get to 15, divide by three – and you know that the storm is still five kilometres away. This measuring principle, which is also used by laser devices, is known as the “running time procedure”.

The speed of light is much higher than that of sound, and the times involved are extremely short where distances are limited. It thus follows that short distances of just a few metres cannot be measured with any great accuracy using the running time procedure. read more »
